With the future of agriculture at risk, activating field trials of a new solution to save the bees was a priority
The Opportunity
The future of civilization relies on bees. The vast majority of crops that feed the world are pollinated by bees. Yet bee populations are being decimated. The agricultural industry, led by the beekeeping industry, is seeking sustainable solutions to this massive issue. ApiSave has developed a natural, effective solution to protect against three of the major pathogen and pest risks to bee hives, addressing a global market potential of $10 billion.
The Challenge
The clock is ticking. Current hive solutions are losing effectiveness. Three of the major risks to bees –– bacterial pathogens (P. Larvae and M. plutonius) and varroa mites –– are adapting and gaining resistance. Beekeepers need a solution that is proven, safe and validated. ApiSave knew their natural, plant- based extract was able to eradicate foulbrood and kill varroa mites in the lab. But they needed to conduct field trials quickly and efficiently to get their product onto the market.
We knew we had a product that could make a difference. But we had to work with the beekeepers to produce the necessary data in all conditions and environments. Time was of the essence as this bee health problem is growing and it is global, so it was critical to have the financial support of NPC and their connections to the industry.
NPC’s Solution
Working closely with Natural Products Canada, ApiSave planned a suite of field trials with Canadian beekeepers. NPC provided $250,000 through their Proof of Concept Program to support the trials, which are being conducted with project partners. Data from the field trials will be included as supporting documentation in the application for regulatory approval so the product can go to market.
