Fermentation-based bioplastics
-
Solving the classic start-up dilemma of scale.
Bosk uses waste from the pulp and paper industry to create truly sustainable and cost-competitive bioplastics
The Opportunity
There’s a growing demand for sustainable plastics that don’t rely on fossil fuels or fill our landfills and oceans with products that take centuries to decompose. Existing bioplastic technologies (PHAs and PLAs) address some of the issues, but cost competitiveness and speed of biodegradation are still issues for this new product category.
The Challenge
Bosk Bioproducts has a unique process that uses feedstock from the pulp and paper industry in a way to create their REGENTM brand of bioplastics with the quick compost times that industry needs, at a cost that is closer to conventional, petroleum-based plastics. Like many start-ups, their challenge was producing enough product to gain the serious interest from clients.
There is a balancing act in expanding production capacity. We knew there would be refinement and adjustments needed as we scaled. Having an expert engineer on our team was a game-changing factor for us to move from customer interest to customer fulfillment through the increased capacity that we have now.
NPC’s Solution
Bosk needed to build out its production capacity. But that required a senior engineer to direct and manage the step-wise process to be as streamlined and efficient as possible. NPC provided Bosk with $50,000 through its Access to Talent Program, enabling them to hire the right engineer, and complete their planning and begin costing. With this under their belts, Bosk went on to secure key industrial clients as well as additional capital, allowing them to set up an expanded production facility.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
