Species-specific animal probiotics

Validating the technology to open a whole new market
CanBiocin’s species-specific probiotics had a real opportunity to improve the health and productivity of poultry. NPC’s support ensured they could conduct the work that has unlocked a whole new market.
The Opportunity
Poultry can be vulnerable to several diseases that have traditionally relied upon antibiotics to control. One in particular is necrotic enteritis, which causes $5-6 billion (USD) in losses globally each year. CanBiocin’s blend of probiotiocs, prebiotics and postbiotics held substantial potential to protect the gut health of chickens and help prevent these losses.
The Challenge
CanBiocin’s proprietary species-specific probiotics were already known to be effective in supporting poultry health. But the desired delivery path through feed pellets had not been developed. In particular, the heat involved in manufacturing poultry feed pellets presented challenges to the functionality of the probiotics.
NPC understands the time and effort to develop and refine a product to address market opportunities. This Program addressed this need for us, and was a critical component in our ability to position an innovative solution for this important market.
NPC’s Solution
NPC provided over $110,000 through its Proof of Concept Program to support CanBiocin’s strategic approach to solving the food application problem. New patented processes were developed, and feeding trials were conducted. This confirmed that the efficacy of the probiotic was maintained throughout the poultry feed production. CanBiocin’s new innovation opened the poultry market as well as many other lucrative markets that require functional ingredient delivery through heat-dependent food and feed products.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
