Natural anti-inflammatories
-
Addressing a global health challenge with safe, effective natural products.
Managing the powerful compounds in plants to create cost-competitive natural anti-inflammatory products
The Opportunity
Nearly 8 million Canadians live with inflammation-related chronic conditions Inflammatory processes are involved in the onset and maintenance of many chronic (e.g. neurodegenerative diseases, inflammatory bowel syndromes,) and acute (allergies, injuries, infections) disorders. Typical inflammation treatments include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which can cause side effects, and may not be ideal for everyone. Despite the increasing shift towards natural therapeutics, proposed ingredients are generally less effective, have bioavailability issues and lack scientific evidence on safety and efficacy. Therefore, the production of novel anti-inflammatory compounds is still in great demand.
The Challenge
Canurta Therapeutics has a novel approach to produce rare natural bioactive compounds found in plants that allows for scalable extraction of therapeutic doses, which overcome some of the key industry challenges. They needed to translate this ability into a platform technology to enable cost-competitive, streamlined production. This key step required a solid new addition to their scientific team.
We have the potential to substantially improve the wellbeing of literally hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Having a partner like NPC recognize this potential was invaluable to a company at our stage and size.
NPC’s Solution
Canurta Therapeutics needed to hire someone with the scientific and technical expertise to research and develop a scalable platform to synthesize their hemp-derived polyphenols. With over $41,000 from NPC, Canurta Therapeutics was able to hire a Senior Technical Research Manager to lead the development of their scientific methods and protocols, and to help develop the company’s IP. With this addition to the team, Canurta Therapeutics hit its key milestones, and secured additional IP and capital, adding to its potential for true commercialization and market success.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
