Salt- & sugar-reducing ingredient
-
Upcycling products from the winemaking industry into valuable ingredients.
An eco-conscious ingredient that helps food formulators reduce salt and sugar by up to 50%
The Opportunity
There is a growing demand for clean label products. Consumers are increasingly avoiding products that contain artificial or unpronounceable ingredients or high levels of trans fats, salt and sugar. But making foods stand up to the expectation of taste, texture and functionality without some of these ingredients is difficult. Fortunately Crush Dynamics (formerly WineCrush) has developed an ingredient that tackles this head on.
The Challenge
Crush Dynamics created a powerful ingredient from the material leftover after grapes are crushed for the winemaking industry. This ‘waste’ that would normally have gone to the landfill is actually full of antioxidants and other valuable compounds that are not only good for you, but also enhance the aroma, appearance and taste of foods. With a unique fermentation-reliant process, Crush needed to validate its ability to scale production to serve the growing number of clients interested in their salt-and sugar-reducing ingredient.
Working with NPC throughout our start-up phase was absolutely critical to our success. The advice and connections were invaluable, and the financial support to hire a lead sales professional was a true game-changer.
NPC’s Solution
NPC provided Crush with $100,000 through its Access to Talent Program to hire a senior operational expert to design and oversee the testing and validation of their new and proprietary production process. With this work complete, Crush was able to identify the path to broader manufacturing capacity, leading to key client contracts and increased sales.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
