Food as medicine
-
Boosting the fire power of a promising new food as medicine company.
A new scientific lead provides direction and clarity to a start-up on the rise
The Opportunity
The idea of ‘food as medicine’ is gaining ground as scientific evidence supports the adage that “we are what we eat”. But many people do not receive all the nutrients they need from their diet. And those undergoing medical interventions are particularly suited to benefit from nutritional support. Enhanced Medical Nutrition (EMN) is focused on medical nutrition that enhances patient outcomes after surgery.
The Challenge
EMN has developed a proprietary medical food designed to support optimal healing and recovery for those undergoing surgeries such as hip and shoulder replacements. The product was solid, and they were making great strides on their business growth. But to meet the growing demand, they needed a dedicated scientific lead to direct their R&D, and guide the translation of their technical information for their sales team.
Having the right person in the right role has created an exponential gain for us. It’s a great example of how NPC understands – and serves – the needs of high-innovation start-ups.
NPC’s Solution
NPC provided $75,000 through its Access To Talent Program to support EMN’s hiring of a new Chief Scientific Officer. The new addition to the team has helped the company fine-tune new product development goals and associated R&D. She has also provided guidance and clarity around product marketing communication, collateral and translation of scientific data for the sales team. Most importantly, he has freed up the CEO to focus on the next steps of growth for the company.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
