Sustainable packaging solution
-
What if you could make fresh foods last 30% longer?
Advancing a biobased technology that can extend the shelf life of fresh proteins by up to 30%
The Opportunity
More than 10 million tonnes of fish are thrown out each year, producing organic waste and methane emissions, and also contributing to overfishing – not to mention putting an unwanted dent in our wallets. Freshr’s natural, sustainable packaging solution tackles this issue head on, extending shelf life by up to 30%. That means an extra two to four days of safety and freshness for packaged fish, like salmon.
The Challenge
Many early-stage companies face what is referred to as the ‘valley of death’ as they have a product concept with market potential, but no way of producing it for product testing and validation with potential clients. Freshr found themselves facing this well-known challenge with their unique packaging technology that extends the shelf life of food without adding more plastics to food packaging.
That [NPC] funding was critical to bridging the gap from R&D in the lab to scaling our technology for commercialization. It was the perfect fit for us at that stage.
NPC’s Solution
NPC saw the incredible potential in Freshr and worked with them to ensure they were ready for their next step. Through NPC’s Proof of Concept Program, Freshr was able to access $250,000 to build a pilot production line for their unique coating and increase production for material testing and validation – and eventual revenue – with numerous global players ranging from fish producers to packaging companies.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
