Biodegradable Nursery Packaging Scale-Up and Demonstration
Scaling production of ultra-biodegradable antimicrobial biocomposites for agricultural nursery seedling trays and pots
The Opportunity
Canada’s nursery sector was valued at $796.1M in 2024. Ontario accounts for 41.7% of national sales. Nurseries consume high volumes of single-use plastic seedling trays and pots on a recurring basis. Pressure around plastic waste and sustainability is creating clear demand for alternatives. No existing biodegradable option has demonstrated reliable performance at commercial scale in horticultural environments.
The Challenge
Existing biodegradable alternatives fail in nursery conditions. Current compostable and biobased materials lose wet-strength, deform under repeated irrigation, and degrade inconsistently. This makes them unsuitable for commercial nursery use. GreenVeil must demonstrate consistent pilot-scale production and validated real-world field performance to displace incumbent petroleum-based plastics.
NPC’s great support is accelerating GreenVeil’s transition from prototype development to pilot production for our biodegradable nursery solutions. Through valuable funding, advice, mentorship, and strategic connections, NPC is enabling us to validate the technology with customers and move closer to commercialization.
NPC’s Solution
NPC’s Proof of Concept Program is supporting GreenVeil Packaging with production scale-up and demonstration trials of biodegradable nursery seedling plug trays and pots. The project will validate GreenVeil’s thermoformable, ultra-biodegradable antimicrobial biocomposite film platform as a replacement for single-use petroleum-based plastics in agricultural applications. NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals, and the planet. They propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections, and capital needed to rapidly develop, validate, and scale transformative solutions.
