Food safety technology

Expanding the toolkit to fight food contamination.
Bridging the gap between high-tech science and real-life application
The Opportunity
In Canada alone, thousands of people are hospitalized and hundreds more die each year of food poisoning. Common culprits, such as E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria, not only put people’s lives at risk, but also cause billions of dollars in losses for food companies around the world. Innodal’s new, natural technology protects consumers from contaminants, while overcoming industry challenges of food quality and composition.
The Challenge
Innodal’s technology is deep science that needs to be applied in real-world food processing facilities, which can have wildly different systems and factors. Their product needed to be fully understood and validated within specific industries such as meat, cheese and fish, to ensure that it worked and could be incorporated into traditional food production lines.
This funding helped us make connections with the food processors. It allowed us to bridge that gap from high-tech science to real-life application. We were able to show that, whether we were working with the seafood, meat or cheese industry, [our product] Inneo would work.
NPC’s Solution
Innodal used NPC’s Proof of Concept Program to conduct testing with three major food companies to prove that their Inneo food safety product would “not just work in the minds of the scientists, but in the hands of the food processors”. The interest and commitment of the companies to participate in the projects – and later to become customers – helped to validate the incredible need for this product, which has since earned the company Canada’s Governor General Award for Innovation.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
