Mushroom Mycelium: The Protein Revolution
Maia Farms is producing protein 3X more efficiently than competitors, for 100X less cost—and it tastes better too.
The Opportunity
Maia’s proprietary Fungal Intelligence™ platform produces fresh mushroom mycelium—a whole-food protein with yields three times higher than industry standards, using equipment 100 times less expensive than precision fermentation. With a mild flavour and highly functional texture, it’s suitable for plant-based meats, blended meat applications, functional foods, snack foods, and pet nutrition. The global mycoprotein market is projected to reach $18 billion by 2030, driven by strong consumer interest in meat alternatives and demand for minimally processed ingredients. Maia’s technology positions Canada as a leader in the next generation of sustainable protein production.
The Challenge
Global protein demand is expected to double by 2050, but traditional animal agriculture contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, water scarcity, and land degradation. Current alternative proteins face their own limitations: high costs, scalability issues, unappealing sensory qualities, and suboptimal nutritional profiles. Unlike conventional fermentation systems that are limited by contamination, short production runs, and costly downstream processing, Maia’s approach allows for extended, stable fermentations that maximize yield and lower costs.
NPC’s funding enables the 20,000-liter validation that bridges lab results to commercial viability. This unlocks significant partnerships and proves Canada can lead sustainable protein production through fungal fermentation.
NPC’s Solution
NPC’s Proof of Concept funding will facilitate pilot scale validation at 20,000 liters in a food-grade manufacturing environment. This will represent a 20 times increase from Maia’s demonstrated 1,000 liter scale and will confirm technical and economic viability while generating the data needed to secure commercial partnerships and additional investment.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
