The Opportunity
Soybeans are one of the largest sources of plant-based protein. Unfortunately, traditional extraction processes have relied on hexane, a toxic carcinogen. In addition, Canada’s vast amounts of soy crops are often processed overseas, and reimported back to Canada at a higher value. New Protein International (NPI) is packing a 1-2 punch to mitigate these issues with the first ever soy processing facility in Canada that is also hexane-free.
The Challenge
NPI is committed helping Canada seize the growing demand for plant-based protein. It has exclusive rights to promising varieties of non-GMO soybeans, as well as a game-changing, proprietary, hexane-free processing technology. The company needed a demonstration facility to optimize its technology, and work with prospective customers to maximize this important, value-added processing facility and ensure the growth of Canada’s soy protein industry.
Our demonstration facility showcases our hexane-free soy processing technology, and allows us to collaborate with other Canadian plant protein innovators to produce a variety of soy products. NPC’s financial support has been invaluable in bringing this facility to life.
NPC’s Solution
NPC’s Proof of Concept Program put $250,000 towards NPI’s Innovation Lab – the central spot for R&D with potential customers to test their proprietary soybean varieties and hexane-free technologies. All of this brings them one step closer to full-fledged processing of soy protein and other oilseed proteins, creating a lucrative new domestic food processing industry in Canada.
