Plant-based meal replacement

One founder’s quest to get the nutrition we need, when we need it most.
An ill parent sparks a healthy approach to meal replacement drinks
The Opportunity
Watching his ailing mother drinking a meal replacement beverage filled with unhealthy ingredients, Gregg Curwin knew there had to be a better way. Meal replacement beverages are consumed by many people due to illness or convenience, but very few options exist for people seeking clean label, plant-based nutrition. Novagevity’s Sperri line of beverages fills that gap.
The Challenge
The trick was to develop a formula that delivered optimal nutrition – plant-based protein, vitamins and minerals, antioxidants without harmful sugars or preservatives – and make sure it tasted great. After much fine-tuning, Sperri was born. Now the challenge was to get it into the hands of customers.
When we launched this idea, the first group we called was NPC. They asked us the tough questions, the ones that make you go back to the drawing board and dig a little deeper to get the right information.
NPC’s Solution
Sperri was a new offering – not yet in many stores. As a specialty items, it had work to do to gain consumer interest and sales. NPC provided $11,250 to support the development of an e-commerce site to help introduce the delicious product to customers. The result was an incredible success. Early customers gave rave reviews, prompting retailers to put it on shelves. Now Sperri can be found in key retailers like Sobeys and Lawtons across Canada, and at time of publication, making its debut into the USA.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
