Animal antibiotic alternative, anti-infectives
-
How sharks and llamas can save the world.
NovoBind develops next-generation biologics using nanobodies that attack disease
The Opportunity
Bacterial and viral pathogens have a devastating impact on poultry, shrimp, and livestock production, creating billions of dollars in losses each year. But the main weapons in the fight are antibiotics, which are becoming ineffective as pathogens develop resistance, and are contributing to the global issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The animal production industry is extremely incentivized to find ways to reduce the use of antibiotics and maximize output by improving animal health. NovoBind’s next-generation biologics help to tackle key diseases without the use of antibiotics in a cost neutral manner to the farmer.
The Challenge
Novobind has fine-tuned the use of nanobodies – specialized antibody fragments derived from llamas and sharks – to target and neutralize viruses, bacteria and parasites. Unlike antibiotics, continual use does not create resistance to the nanobodies, and presents a safe and effective alternative to the current treatment. As an early-stage company with a great technology platform, NovoBind is seeking capital and strategic partners to commercialize its solutions.
NPC has been an incredible partner, providing guidance and a network of partners, key opinion leaders and industry leaders. Their capital and rigorous investment process lends credibility that makes other investors pay attention.
NPC’s Solution
NPC leveraged its Investment Fund to invest $300,000 into NovoBind, which used the capital to build the company and conduct feed trials in poultry and shrimp. The results show dramatically increased resistance to disease and increased feed conversion rates, which are both key economic factors for producers.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
