Light-activated dental hygiene
-
A bite-sized combo of nature and technology.
Light activates this plant-based compound to help keep teeth clean
The Opportunity
Oral health is important. It goes well beyond the social benefit of having a nice smile. It can prevent unnecessary pain and discomfort, dental interventions such as extractions and surgeries, and even reduce our risk of other associated diseases. So maintaining good oral hygiene is essential. But for some individuals, including those with orthodontic devices, regular brushing and flossing is not enough to thoroughly remove the bacteria that can lead to decay and gum disease.
The Challenge
PhotoDynamic developed a powerful new innovation to promote oral health. Their solution combines a natural plant-derived active compound that is activated by light to kill the bacteria that causes dental plaque. The solution is deployed through a mouthguard-like device held in the mouth for 60 seconds. The product had the support and interest from orthodontists seeking ways to ensure their patients’ good oral health. But PhotoDynamic needed capital to complete the next phase of commercialization.
NPC understood our technology and the complex path to take it to market. They were the true ‘smart capital’ we needed in this raise.
NPC’s Solution
NPC participated in PhotoDynamic’s $2.3M capital raise, helping them to advance their technology validation and go-to-market strategy. The company achieved several key milestones since then, including: ISO certification, US patents, Canadian medical device license, clinical trials and a controlled market launch.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
