From Ocean Invasive to Acoustic Innovation

Seacork Studio is transforming invasive seaweed into building materials that sequester carbon, rather than polluting landfills.

    The Opportunity

Seacork Studio is positioned to capture a significant share of the $200 million serviceable obtainable market in North America and Europe. With traditional panels facing regulatory pressure and demand for circular building materials accelerating, architects and developers actively seek sustainable alternatives. Seacork’s carbon-negative, fully circular panels meet commercial acoustic standards while turning marine invasive species into revenue. By solving the dewatering bottleneck, Seacork can establish a first-mover advantage in seaweed-based building materials.

    The Challenge

Seacork faced a critical production bottleneck to commercialization: the dewatering process. Their panels start as bio-composite slurry with high water content, requiring long hours of low-temperature drying per batch. This limited production to just 70 square feet per week—far below commercial viability. Without validating faster, more energy-efficient dewatering methods at pilot scale, Seacork couldn’t meet customer demand or attract investment for full-scale manufacturing.

NPC’s support helps us solve the dewatering bottleneck—scaling from 70 to 1,000 square feet weekly. That’s the difference between prototype and viable business, turning invasive species into carbon-negative building materials.

    NPC’s Solution

NPC’s Proof of Concept funding will support dewatering trials—a critical production bottleneck. The work will validate cost-effective, energy-efficient dewatering processes and experimental optimization trials, enabling Seacork to scale from 70 to 1,000 square feet per week production capacity.

NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
