Untangling the regulatory path for a new smoking-cessation product
The Opportunity
Quitting smoking is tough. There are many nicotine replacement therapies including patches and gums to help people kick the unhealthy habit. Sesh had already developed a nicotine-replacement gum, but saw potential in a new, faster acting format that would be the first of its kind in Canada.
The Challenge
As a natural health product, nicotine-replacement therapies need to meet Health Canada’s regulatory requirements. Sesh was confident that the ingredients in their new format were all compliant with the requirements individually, but needed to ensure they could achieve the required natural product number when combined.
There’s substantial time and money put into product development. Making sure we were in line with the regulatory requirements was essential to streamlining that process for the most efficient and fast path to market
NPC’s Solution
Natural Products Canada provided $25,000 to Sesh through its Fast Track To Financing Program to support their work with a regulatory consultant. The extensive plan included protocol for clinical trials to ensure dosage would meet regulatory requirements. As a result, Sesh identified a potential alternate health claim, additional research opportunities, and two regulatory submission pathways as a risk management plan.
