Converting biomass to biofuels and sustainable chemicals
-
Is it possible to make all the things that currently rely on the fossil fuel complex from a sustainable, bio-based source? SixRing is on the path to find out.
Converting biomass into biofuels and chemicals with up to 80% fewer GHGs
The Opportunity
We all know that the combustion of fossil fuels is contributing to climate change, and it’s something governments, industry and citizens are actively seeking to solve. SixRing has leveraged their experience in the oil and gas industry to convert biomass from non-food sources such as forestry or agriculture waste into biochemicals and biofuels that produce up to 80% fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
The Challenge
For new technologies, there’s a lot of potential for things to go wrong, not work, or fail at new or different scales. And it takes time and money to regroup and find solutions. For SixRing, the advanced technology means they need a lot of different options for feedstocks and microorganisms to broaden the potential applications and de-risk the technology.
We’re grateful that we’ve got agencies like NPC that understand the language of entrepreneurs and innovators in the technology space and are willing to put some capital towards the baby steps that build the big companies of tomorrow.
NPC’s Solution
SixRing came to NPC to help them evaluate a number of different feedstocks and organisms to use in the process to convert plant-based cellulose to ethanol. This allows SixRing to pursue different avenues of development, without having to make an irrevocable decision. In addition, the NPC support is providing 3rd party validation that the company is on the right track with their technology development, which is attractive to other potential funders at the next stage of commercialization.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
