Delivering a microbial therapeutic approach to symptoms of bipolar disorder

The Gut-Brain Connection to Mental Wellness
Taylored Biotherapeutics is developing a microbial therapeutic approach to symptoms of bipolar disorder.
The Opportunity
Taylored Biotherapeutics addresses an urgent need affecting 40 million people living with bipolar disorder globally. Based on promising clinical data that indicates modulating the gut microbiome can positively influence symptoms of depression with a favorable side effect profile, and equipped with a patented composition and biobank platform applicable to major depression and OCD, Taylored has the foundation for a scalable platform positioning Canada as a leader in microbiome-based mental health therapeutics
The Challenge
Despite breakthrough clinical results, Taylored faced critical barriers to scaling: navigating complex regulatory pathways and protecting intellectual property. Without a clear regulatory strategy for both the natural health product pathway in Canada and dietary supplement pathway in the United States, the company couldn’t confidently design phase two trials or secure the partnerships needed for manufacturing and distribution. Simultaneously, the company’s IP portfolio required strategic development to protect its competitive position and maximize valuation for fundraising. These foundational elements—regulatory clarity and IP protection—were essential prerequisites for attracting the significant capital needed to advance through clinical trials and reach commercial scale.
NPC’s support helps us navigate regulatory complexity and protect our IP as we advance from clinical breakthrough to market. This foundation is essential for attracting additional investment and building our transformative platform.
NPC’s Solution
Through the Fast Track to Financing program, NPC will support critical regulatory and intellectual property planning. This includes developing the regulatory pathway for clinical trials in Canada and comprehensive IP strategy development, positioning Taylored to advance from clinical breakthrough to a market-ready therapeutic product.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
