Biodegradable transparent films
-
Tackling the packaging problem.
A transparent film that holds up like traditional plastic but breaks down like plant matter
The Opportunity
Packaging is the number one source of plastic waste, and accounts for 1.6 million tonnes of plastic each year in Canada – nearly a third of that is plastic films like cellophane. In efforts to move towards a zero plastic waste economy, countries around the world have been banning single use plastics and encouraging the use of biodegradable plastics. But the technology in bioplastics has some challenges: in strength and barrier properties, and in the energy, chemicals and cost required to produce it. Dr. Feng Jiang and his team at the University of British Columbia have a solution.
The Challenge
Dr. Feng Jiang and his team developed a process to produce biodegradable films for packaging using locally-sourced softwood kraft pulp and sodium hydroxide. The result is a transparent cellulose film that avoids the use of excessive energy and chemicals, and demonstrates excellent stability and performance, all with the added benefit of decomposing in soil within a few weeks. The team needed some key market data to help inform its business strategy to take this technology to market.
We think we have an important solution to the plastics issue. NPC’s support helped us develop the business plan to move it forward
NPC’s Solution
NPC provided UBC with just over $11,000 to work with a consultant to gather the needed data. The findings helped the team understand the market, including key performance and manufacturing criteria, as well as potential pricing and functionality targets. With this work complete, the team is able to refine its technology and advance its business plan to the next level.
NPC is committed to the creation of natural products that are better for people, animals and the planet. We propel early-stage Canadian innovators with the advice, connections and capital they need to develop and de-risk their solutions quickly and efficiently.
